South African Businesses Are Adopting AI — But How Many Are Actually Using It?
Blog · 25 September 2026
Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday business, from customer service and software development to data analysis and internal operations. But experimenting with AI and successfully integrating it into a business are two very different things.
A 2026 South African study reported by TechCentral found that only around a quarter of surveyed organizations had AI systems running in production. The challenge is therefore shifting from whether businesses are interested in AI to whether they can turn that interest into technology that delivers reliable business value.
Moving beyond the pilot stage requires more than a capable AI model. Businesses need quality data, secure infrastructure, integration with existing systems and clear processes for human oversight. A smaller AI solution that reliably solves a specific business problem can ultimately be more valuable than an ambitious project that never progresses beyond experimentation.
For South African businesses, the next stage of AI adoption will be about implementation rather than simply following the latest technology. The organisations that gain the most from AI will be those that identify where it genuinely improves operations and build the systems and processes needed to make those improvements sustainable.
