Africa’s Economy Is Growing — The World Bank Says AI Could Help Turn That Growth Into Jobs

Blog · 29 September 2026

Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is projected to grow by 4.3% in 2026, according to the World Bank. But economic growth alone is not enough — the bigger challenge is translating that momentum into jobs and opportunities for a rapidly growing population.

Artificial intelligence could play an important role. Rather than focusing only on building advanced AI models, Africa has an opportunity to use AI practically across education, agriculture, finance and small-business operations.

Making that possible will require more than software. Reliable energy, connectivity, computing infrastructure, digital skills and quality local data will all determine how successfully African businesses can adopt AI.

The opportunity is therefore not simply to use more AI, but to build the infrastructure and solutions that allow it to solve real African problems — turning technological progress into measurable economic impact.
