South Africa’s Networks Are Getting Faster — But 5G Depends on More Than Mobile Towers

Blog · 30 September 2026

South Africa continues to invest in faster, wider mobile connectivity. In 2026, rain expanded its 5G network using new sub-1 GHz Massive MIMO technology designed to increase coverage and network capacity, including in areas where providing reliable high-speed connectivity can be more difficult.

But 5G is only one part of the picture. Fibre networks connect towers and businesses, while data centres and cloud infrastructure process and store the growing amount of information travelling across those networks.

As more businesses depend on cloud platforms, digital payments and connected services, reliable connectivity becomes business infrastructure rather than simply faster internet. South Africa’s digital future will therefore depend on how effectively 5G, fibre, cloud and data centres grow together.
