Blog · 2 October 2026
South African banking is becoming increasingly digital as customers move everyday transactions from traditional counters to self-service channels.
The traditional bank branch is changing. Absa reported that more than 90% of its retail customers now use self-service channels for routine transactions, while around 90% of deposits are processed through ATMs and self-service devices. TechCentral
The bank has also expanded its smaller sales and service outlets from 122 to 215 as it moves away from traditional full-service branches. The shift reflects a wider change in how customers expect to manage their money — quickly, digitally and with less dependence on a physical counter.
